if you happen to work here in san jose, the minimum wage jumps $2 from $8 to $10 an hour. one restaurant here in san jose starting paying their workers that $10 an hour back in december. the owner who owns pizza my heart in san jose says he wants to see how the new pay increase works and if it impacts the bottom line and admits prices on the menu had to increase when wages increased. other businesses say they may have to make similar adjustments, charging customers more in the end. the san jose minimum wage increase was approved by voters back in november and at pizza my heart, the transition, so far, it has been government. >> we raised prices roughly 3 percent overall and that was kind of the test to make sure it covers it, and it has so it has been neutral to us overall. who has the highest minimum wage in the nation, san francisco topped the list with workers making $10.55 an hour and santa fe, new mexico, people are paid $10.51 for minimum wake and now san jose is the third highest in the nation paying workers $10 an hour according to the united states department of labor

is in san jose this morning. people voted for this. >> reporter: people voted for this in november. what's happening today is minimum wage workers in san jose will now make $10 an hour. that's up from $8 an hour. this is the largest minimum wage pay increase in the nation. now, again, voters approved measure d in the fall. that's why the $2 increase is happening. this is of course happy news for the thousands of minimum wage workers in the city. but san jose's mayor is concerned that some businesses might not be able to handle the hike. he is worried people could lose their jobs. >> as the minimum wage goes up, small businesses in particular will make accommodations. some will absorb the cost, some will pass it on to their customers and some will have to decrease jobs and lay people off. >> a campaign is also kicking off today to encourage people to spend their extra money from those earnings in the city. the slogan is, earn and spend in san jose. it will be displayed in business windows. the minimum wage in california is $8 an hour. in san j

not heard back. back to you. . >> thank you. >>> in san jose police are investigating the city's ninth deadly shooting of the year. a man was found fatally shot in the area of murtha drive and capitol avenue. alex savage is live. >> reporter: good afternoon. many on this block heard a loud fight just a couple hours before this man was found dead right here on the sidewalk. police do think that early morning disturbance may be related to this deadly shooting. a neighbor leaving for work made the discovery around 4:25 a.m. this morning. she spotted someone lying in the street. when police got here are to the 2700 block of murtha drive, they found a hispanic man in his 30s who had been shot in the chest. the people across the street heard what sounded like gunfire. >> it's really sad to see how violence has just come up to -- i've lived in san jose since i was 14. >> a police lieutenant told us the victim lived in this neighborhood but it's unclear why he was targeted. neighbors did report a fight in the area around 2:00 this morning and police think there is a connection to the killing.

school in san jose. what happened, amy? apologies to you -- okay, amy? >> technical difficulties, during a field trip, the students were on a bus and went to the college on a trip. the police say the sex offender was on the bus with the students. this happens last month. a viewer alerted us to the situation and wants to call attention to it. last night the viewer contacted us. we are still waiting to hear back from the school officials. we got a copy of this letter that went to parents saying that a registered association offender who was not authorized to be on the bus knew a district volunteer on the trip and was with the students on the bus back to high school to san jose but he did not have any contact of any kind with any student that day. registered sex offenders are not allowed to be on school property or to come in contact with underage students. now the san jose police department have confirmed it is investigating thissings -- this incident. no inappropriate conduct is reported but admits this is a serious violation of school policy. reporting live in san jose for abc7 news. >>

at a homeless encampment near san jose's mineta international airport will soon be on the move. police say san jose police officers were on a special task force in plain clothes driving unmarked cars and working a separate case when they spotted the two-door honda which was stolen. the sheriff deputies say the driver of the honda threw it in reverse, he aimed to an officer. the officer hit the driver in the head with one spot. witnesses wondered if the suspect knew they were undercover police. (inaudible). >> we didn't hearing anything like "put your hands up," just two quick shots, pop, pop. >> the suspect knew because they did put their lights and siren on attempting to stop the vehicle before he tried to ram the two police vehicles and subsequently tried to run over an officer. >> the identity of the dead driver has not been released. there was also a male passenger with him and that person is considered a witness and is cooperating with san jose police this morning. still an active scene as police collect evidence. the case is still unfolding. >> we have developing news from san jose this morning where authorities are looking for an elderly man who went missing yesterday

fast food restaurant at the shopping center. a san jose police officer that happened to be on a traffic stop a block away heard the crash and was the first responder out on the scene. the paramedics came out and declared the driver dead on the scene. police think they know who he is but are not releasing his name until they are able to notify the family. they think he is in his late 20s, early 30s. no obvious signs of drinking and driving but they won't be able to rule that out for sure until toxicology tests, not something the coroner would be performing. in the foregrounds, a white van pulling up. we believe that coroner is coming on the scene which means that maybe the scene will be cleared up sooner than initially thought. the eta was around 7:00. with the coroner coming on the skeep, it is quite possible it could be sooner. for more on your morning commute, i'm going to send it over to traffic anchor, mike inouye. mike? >>> as you saw, bob talked about the coroner potentially arriving on scene. that white van we just saw. that may be the issue. let's look at some

collecting evidence. just before 7:00 last night san jose police officers in unmarked cars tried to stop the car but the driver of the car started ramming into two police cars and a parked vehicle. the officer got out of their vehicle and that's when the suspect accelerated towards the officer. out of fear for their lives they shot the suspect and one neighbor heard all the chaos while she was eating dinner. >> we heard a car crash and she looked out the window and it was a car crash and we ran outside and we all of a sudden heard a popping sound and i guess it was gunfire. and they had all of their guns drawn and she was telling everybody, go inside, go inside. to san jose. we are in san grows -- we start with claudine in santa cruz. >> reporter: we are standing at the start of the procession. the folks told to gather here starting about seven this morning and in the last several minutes we have seen activity. take a look to the side of me. you can see three buses that are lined up along this street. they have the santa cruz police emblem on them and a sign. we assume possibly members of the department will ride these buses down the procession. i want to show you what's happening in this parking lot just near the boardwalk here. you can see motor officers starting to line up their motorcycles. they will stage there and then move to the start of the procession. this procession, ready to leave about 8:45 but everybody was told to gather about seven this morning so it'll just get busier. the morning has started in this community. everybody is still trying to dumb to terms with the loss of the two officers. there was a memorial last night at the santa cruz memorial funeral home. just a chance for people, friends, family, strangers to come. there

the suspects could have been linked to an armed robbery in san jose. here's the intersection where the drive-by shooting happened and police were led on a wild chase through three east bay cities late last night. our cameras caught the chase north through 880. police tried to pull the driver other in hayward for dui and reckless driving. but he sped off through san leandro and oakland. the car spun out of control between 580 between harrison and park and police cars slammed into it to box the car in. officers say people were throwing things out on the roadway. they never found the objects but officers did find weapons inside the vehicle when it finally stopped. >> they pursued the vehicle in oakland where it crossed across the center median. the three occupants were taken into custody from there. >> reporter: police believe those three could be tied to a shooting in hayward early yesterday afternoon. a man was driving with his wife and child at tennyson and kalaroga when he was struck by a bullet and taken to the hospital. he's expected to survive. a hayward police officer tweeted around mid

to a man, a stranger, standing over her bed in san jose. the shock didn't end there. the man was a registered sex offender on parole, and he was tracking police with an app. kris sanchez joins us from san jose this evening with what we now know about the suspect. kris? >> reporter: well, as you mentioned, raj, he is a parolee and we know he is registered as a transient. he tried to use technology to avoid capture. he still got caught after breaking into that south san jose home. when san jose police were searching for an attempted sexual assault suspect around 3:20 this morning, that suspect, 29-year-old ryan campbell, was listening to them on their radio. he heard them coming. he was running an app on his smartphone that allowed him to listen to police scanners. >> it was sent to the san jose southern division channel 2, actually trying to monitor our officers as they were respond ing to the crime. >> reporter: equally shocking when he broke into this home and stood over a woman's bed, he was wearing an ankle bracelet, a condition of his parole on a burglary conviction. but

an e-mail. >>> new at 11:00, from palo alto to san jose, he's worked with teenagers across the bay area for years. but late tonight, the district attorney's office confirming to us that it's filed child molestation charges against a well-known baseball coach. george kiriyama joins us this evening from the peninsula with the details. >> reporter: that's right, joel coppin was the head baseball coach here back in 2006 for one season. i got off the phone with the deputy d.a. and he confirms he's been charged with molesting a teenage boy. this is a photo of him after he was arrested back in august for the same thing. at that time, no charges were filed because there was still a lot of investigation that had to be dope. there is a warrant out for his arrest tonight. as of now, kaufman was not been arrested. this is the club's website that he was coach of showing his picture. the club has baseball players from all around the bay area. he owns and operates a batting cage. it's not known if the two victims in this case played baseball for him. the police and the district attorney's office belie
